I’ve written about bean to cup coffee machines in the past, but I’ve never done a reviews post specifically about bean to cup machines, so I thought it was about time to do some research and come up with a list of info on the best bean to cup machines of 2017 – 2018.
This post is about bean to cup filter coffee machines / filter coffee makers with integrated grinders, rather than bean to cup espresso, I discuss bean to cup espresso machines in the post best bean to cup espresso machines here is no such thing as a cheap bean to cup espresso machine though, they start at around £300, so if you’re looking for a cheap bean to cup machine, it’ll have to be a filter coffee machine.
Best Bean to Cup Filter Coffee Machines 2017 – 2018
If you mainly drink filter coffee, then a bean to cup filter machine is the obvious choice. If you were thinking of going Espresso because you mainly drink Americano / long black, then depending on your budget you may want to consider going the filter route. The BTC filter machines start at around £40, while the BTC espresso machines start at around the £300 mark. Yes there is a difference between a cup of filter coffee and a cup of Americano or long black made from Espresso, but if you’re on a budget and you want bean to cup but you’re not all that concerned with the difference between filter coffee vs Americano, then filter may be the way to go.
Incorporating style, convenience and performance, this coffee machine has it all! With an integrated grinder and a 24 hour programmable timer, our Coffee Maker guarantees you the freshest possible coffee, exactly when you need it, and exactly how you like it.
How big is your caffeine craving?
You can make 2 – 12 cups at a time in the Coffee Maker, and set the strength of your brew to weak, medium or strong. Coffee takes only a few minutes to brew, and you can enjoy it as soon as there’s enough in the carafe thanks to the anti-drip spout which shuts off if the jug is removed. The gauge on the side of the machine lets you know when water needs topping up.
Add whole beans to the grinder section at the top of the Coffee Maker and choose the ‘grind on’ function. Beans will be ground and used right away to make your coffee. You can change how finely or coarsely ground the coffee is using the knob by the grinder compartment.
You can also simply use ready ground beans or filter coffee as you would with a standard coffee machine. Just choose the ‘grind off’ setting and add the powder into the filter compartment, where hot water will rush through, picking up all the delicious flavour and filtering through into the carafe.
The ultimate in convenience, you can set the Coffee Maker to start brewing coffee at any time using the 24 hour clock. Once brewed, the hotplate will keep coffee warm for up to 30 minutes, so you can go back for a refill.
The reusable mesh filter can simply be removed and cleaned, so you don’t need to stock up on paper filters. The coffee machine can be cleaned with a damp cloth to keep it looking smart, and occasionally running through water with some descaler will keep the machine in good condition.

Great light commercial piece of equipment. We have operated it for over 12 months without any issue at all.
How rubbish is this? Firstly it wasn’t able to flow the water properly through the filter, only the centre of the filter got watered making this machine waste a lot of beans & money. Secondly, after less than a week it decided that we should go on a caffeine detox and refused to make more than 2 cups at a time. Horribly disappointed, after reading reviews I didn’t expect a stunning machine and expected it to break within maybe half a year, but a week is just ridiculous.
Notes about the reviews:
Most of the low star reviews seem to stem from a “2 cup fault” – which seems to be an issue in hard water areas, which requires the machine to be descaled regularly. Descaling the machine appears to fix this issue, but according to comments it means very regular descaling, every couple of weeks, in hard water areas, which seems excessive.
Given that water makes up the majority of the coffee we drink, water quality makes a big difference to coffee quality, and for that reason it would seem a very good idea to use a water filter, which should also help with this issue. I usually use spring water for my coffee, yes it makes the coffee more expensive but it’s not all that much depending on which water you buy – about 5p per 250ml for one of the less expensive brands of spring water, and about 7p-10p per 250ml for something like Buxton spring water or Evian.
RRP £111.99, currently available here from £79.99.

Amazon reviews, 4/5 stars, from 94 reviews.
Perfect coffee every time, has a strength button so if you like your coffee stronger you can have your coffee stronger at the push of a button.
Absolutely unusable and not fit for purpose. After very, very many flushings with water before even using coffee the taste and smell of the water in the carafe was terrible, smelling strongly of plastic and tasting very bitter. The inside of the cold water holding tank also had a very potent plastic smell. The tap water used, both cold and boiled, was perfectly satisfactory.
Notes about the reviews:
While the majority of reviews are 4 and 5 star, there are some consistent issues reported in the lower number of 1 and 2 star reviews, and I would put this down to faulty units that need returning under warranty, rather than design faults.
RRP £139.99, currently available here from £55.

I LOVE THIS COFFEE MAKER. I have had this a few months now and I can say……I AM IN LOVE, perfect coffee machine for me!! small and compact. it says 4 cups which is actually one of my giant mugs. I use this 3 or 4 times a day and I have absolutely no issues with it at all! highly recommend!
Makes perfectly good coffee beans taste like crap. Cheaply made. Worth spending an extra 20quid to get something better. Avoid. And avoid this seller also.
Notes about the reviews:
The positives seem to praise the compact size and simplicity of use, easy cleaning. The negatives seem to focus on the taste not being as good as expected, and the grinder being particularly loud. One of the positive reviews states that the reviewer contacted the manufacturer to try to get a new filter, and never received a response, which isn’t great, but then again at this price it’s probably just as cost effective to replace the machine if the filter needs replacing.
RRP £69.99, currently available here from £29.99. It’s available for the same price also on the manufacturers own website, but purchasing via Amazon gives you the added protection of Amazon returns if you have a problem, which sounds like it may come in handy from the comment about the manufacturer never responding.

Met and exceeded expectations. Really pleased – easy to setup and easy to use. Produces great tasting coffee.
Didn’t work and on reading a number of reviews this suffers with the pot not being recognised as being in place.
Notes about the reviews:
I think the overall review score is lower than it should be because the product listing contains the options of the smart coffee maker and the smart kettle, and many of the negative reviews are about the smarter kettle, which doesn’t currently appear to be available.
The main negatives regarding the coffee machine are with reference to an issue with the carafe not being recognized, and the advice I have seen on this from the manufacturer is to remove the filter and associated parts, clean them and reassemble, and then after doing this not to open the filter door without having removed the carafe.

This function allows for the coffee to be kept warm for up to 40 minutes after initially being made. This is a very useful and convenient function because it means that you don’t have to keep refilling the coffee jug and therefore drain your coffee supplies.

I’m an AST (Authorized SCAE Trainer) for specialist coffee association of Europe I purchased this machine based upon it having a proper burr grinder. I have brewed various coffees and after adjusting grinder have consistently brewed coffee at correct extraction of 18% to 22% I will add to review after another week of use. If you like coffee great machine easy to set up and programmable for brewing times so you can wake up with fresh coffee ready to go.
You definitely get what you pay for and I clearly didn’t pay enough. I’m a big fan of good coffee makers, unfortunately this is not one of them. The bean hopper is poorly designed and doesn’t ensure beans are fed through to the grinder in sufficient quantity (if at all) resulting in having to push them through by hand. Less than six months in to using and it will now only make half a pot at a time, irrespective of ensuring the settings are correct for full roast / full pot. At best it makes an average cup of coffee. Spend more money on something more robust and capable.
Notes about the reviews:
Many of the low star reviews are complaining about the same 2 cup fault that seem common with the Andrew James bean to cup machine, and it looks like these are the same machine with different branding. As I said with the Andrew James machine, this seems to be an issue that is caused by limescale build up, and descaling seems to sort it. It would seem a pain if you’re in a hard water area, as it would mean descaling it every 2-3 weeks judging by some of the comments, but you could always use a water filter or use spring water for your coffee, it works out about 4 – 10 pence per cup of coffee for spring water depending on which brand.

Russell Hobbs Platinum Grind and Brew Coffeemaker 14899
No paper filters required
The Russell Hobbs Platinum Grind and Brew Coffee Maker 14899 grinds fresh coffee beans for a quality cup of coffee every time, producing from 2 to 10 cups. Designed and manufactured by Russell Hobbs as part of the Platinum Collection, the automatic coffee maker allows you to choose what strength of coffee you prefer–from light to dark–it’s your choice. Or if you’re too busy for the full process, simply use filter coffee instead for the same great taste. It’s easy-to- use and with its digital automatic control allows you to programme its brewing times for maximum convenience.
How do you like your coffee?
Need a strong coffee boost first thing to kick-start your day or looking for something milder and lighter? The Platinum Grind and Brew Coffee Maker allows you to choose how you take your coffee, efficiently grinding the beans to bring you the brew of your choice. Simply select the strength you prefer, whether it is light, medium or dark to enjoy a cup of coffee the way you like it.
Just a few steps and you’re done.
The Platinum Grind and Brew Coffee Maker is simple and easy-to-use. Place the coffee beans in the coffee mill at the rear of the machine and using the carafe, fill the water reservoir with fresh, cold water. Decide the strength of your coffee and how many cups you’d like and then hit the grind button. That familiar grinding noise should soon start, alerting you that your coffee’s on its way as it begins to filter and brew the coffee into the glass carafe.
No coffee beans? No problem–use ground coffee instead
No coffee beans doesn’t mean no coffee with the Platinum Grind and Brew. If you’re low on beans but have ground/ filter coffee to hand, simply use this instead. Rather than adding the beans in the mill, spoon filter coffee into the permanent filter section at the front of the machine allowing you to keep your coffee fresh with a full, rich flavour.
Say goodbye to paper filters with the permanent filter
Paper filters can be a fussy business, slowing down the speed at which you make your coffee so the Platinum Grind and Brew offers a permanent filter. This mainstay of the machine is easy to remove and easy to clean allowing you to re-use over and over again. No more fiddly paper filters that have to be thrown away and replaced, now there’s just one filter to use.
Programme your machine for coffee when you want it
Waking up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee is a treat that can be enjoyed every day with the Platinum Grind and Brew’s digital automatic programmable control. This feature enables you to set what time of day your coffee brews so you don’t have to manually begin the process each time and also has an attractive digital clock display with blue back light– perfect for morning coffee drinkers
Grab a cup while it’s still brewing
You don’t have to wait for brewing to finish to grab a cup–just remove the carafe and pour. The non-drip valve prevents coffee dripping onto the hot plate for up to 20 seconds, allowing you time to pour a cup without making a mess and disrupting brewing.
Stylish and smart
The Platinum Grind and Brew Coffee Maker 14889 is part of the Russell Hobbs Platinum Collection bringing style and function into the kitchen.
Amazon reviews, 3.8/5 stars, from 206 reviews.
After my first cup of coffee I realised that, at last, I have the ability to make consistent coffee that isn’t bitter. I just packed away my espresso machine because too many variables, bean type, grind, how much coffee in the puck and how much pressure to tamp it down. What can be better than a no-pressure drip onto freshly ground coffee?
But my first attempt was a disaster. You want to make one cup so you are attracted to the “2-4” button. You press it and nothing happens. I put my beans in and pressed “2-4” and all my beans were being grinded and quickly disappearing! I switched off and on again, beans still grinding. And again, beans still grinding! I switched off and rescued the grounds for another day. Selected Ground Coffee and I got my first cup. Then I twigged it!!
WARNING: You press the “2-10” button FIRST to select 2 cups minimum or cycle through the number of cups and THEN press “2-4” and select Beans or Ground. “2-4” doesn’t state how many cups but rather the brewing method.
Also, I have a feeling it starts heating and distributing water as soon as water is in the reservoir so put the water in after your selections. I rate it at 5 stars because it delivered a great cup of coffee despite my misunderstanding of the instructions.
Easy to use, good coffee (subject to good beans) but after 2 months grinder kept getting stuck. Had to daily empty grinding area, brush clean and refill before brewing. 1 month later, grinder working better but coffee wasn’t dropping down into brew basket so water came through as hot water. Very disappointed as expected more from a Russell Hobbs.
Notes about the reviews:
Many of the low star reviews seem to be due to faults. A common complaint is also that although the blurb states it “keeps coffee warm for hours” it doesn’t as the hot plate has an auto off after 40 minutes. Personally though, I wouldn’t want to drink coffee that had been sitting on the hot plate for this long, but still if the hot plate can’t stay on for over 40 minutes then I do agree that they shouldn’t be advertising that it keeps coffee hot for hours.
